CYNORA presents record results for high-efficiency blue OLED emitters


CYNORA, a leader in TADF (thermally activated delayed fluorescence) materials for OLEDs, has reached new performance records with its newest blue emitter material. With the current performance, the company is getting close to commercialization of its first product by the end of 2017.

 

Despite urgent requests by the OLED display panel makers for a high-efficiency blue emitter material in the last few years, no material supplier has yet been able to produce such a material. High-efficiency blue emitters are needed to reduce power consumption and increase the display resolution further. At SID 2017, CYNORA presented a blue emitter with a performance that was very close to the requirements of the panel makers. Using TADF technology, the company has achieved 15% EQE at 1000 cd/m² with an emission peak at < 470 nm and a LT97 of > 90 hours (at 700 cd/m²) on a device level.

 

“CYNORA’s latest patent-protected materials show a performance in the range of the customer´s specifications for blue” said Thomas Baumann, CYNORA´s CSO, “This is the best overall performance of a high-efficiency blue emitter so far from what CYNORA has seen. In the finalization of CYNORA’s product development, CYNORA will now focus on moving the emission peak slightly towards 460 nm.”

 

“CYNORA’s progress in the last few months makes us very confident that CYNORA can commercialize CYNORA’s first highly efficient blue emitter by the end of this year, as planned” said Andreas Haldi, CMO at CYNORA. “But CYNORA’s goal is to become a leading OLED material supplier by providing emitters of all display colors. Therefore, CYNORA is planning to follow up on the blue emitter with a green emitter by 2018 and a red emitter by 2019.”

Universal Display Corporation( UDC ), enabling energy-efficient displays and lighting with its Universal PHOLED technology and materials, today reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2016.

For the second quarter of 2016, the Company reported net income of $21.8 million, or $0.46 per diluted share, on revenues of $64.4 million. This includes $1.8 million of currency exchange loss related to the BASF OLED patent acquisition. For the second quarter of 2015, the Company reported a net loss of $11.8 million, or $0.25 per diluted share, on revenues of $58.1 million. The 2015 net loss reflected a $33.0 million write-down of inventory, primarily of an existing host material and associated work-in-process. Excluding this item and its associated $1.9 million reduction of income tax expense, adjusted net income for the second quarter of 2015 was $19.4 million, or $0.41 per diluted share (see “reconciliation of non-GAAP Measures” below for further discussion of the non-GAAP measures included in this release).

“Our second quarter 2016 revenues and net income increased year-over-year, and we maintained our strong margin profile. We are confident that the underlying growth fundamentals of our long-term outlook remain robust, but near-term, we expect our revenue growth will be delayed by about six months,” said Sidney D. Rosenblatt, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Universal Display.

Rosenblatt continued, “We expect strong revenue growth in 2017. At that time, new OLED production from the multi-year capital expenditure cycle is slated to start contributing to our revenues. Ahead of this wave of high-volume capacity, we have been working to expand and broaden our team and core competencies to advance our strategic initiatives and increase our competitive edge. We expect these initiatives, along with new OLED capacity, coupled with our pipeline of new materials, new technologies and new agreements, to bolster our long-term growth plan.”

Financial Highlights for the Second Quarter of 2016

The Company reported revenues of $64.4 million, compared to revenues of $58.1 million for the same quarter of 2015, an increase of 10.8%. Material sales were $22.3 million, down 8.3% compared to the second quarter of 2015, primarily due to a $2.0 million decline in host material sales. Royalty and license fees were $42.0 million, up from $33.7 million in the second quarter of 2015. The Company recognized $37.5 million in Samsung Display Co., Ltd. (SDC) licensing revenue in the second quarter of 2016, up from $30.0 million in the same quarter of 2015.

The Company reported operating income of $34.0 million in the second quarter of 2016, compared to an operating loss of $4.8 million for the second quarter of 2015. Excluding the inventory write-down of $33.0 million, adjusted operating income was $28.2 million for the second quarter of 2015. Operating expenses were $30.4 million, compared to $62.9 million in the second quarter of 2015 and cost of materials was $5.7 million, compared to $39.1 million in the second quarter of 2015, both of which included the inventory write-down of $33.0 million in the second quarter of 2015.

The Company’s balance sheet remained strong, with cash and cash equivalents and investments of $332.0 million as of June 30, 2016. During the second quarter, the Company added $96.0 million in intangible assets in the form of intellectual property purchases and certain other assets from BASF, increasing the portfolio to more than 4,100 issued and pending patents worldwide. During the second quarter, the Company generated $36.2 million in operating cash flow.

Financial Highlights for the First Six Months of 2016

The Company reported revenues of $94.1 million, compared to revenues of $89.3 million for the first half of 2015, or an increase of 5.4%. Material sales were $46.6 million, down 8.8% compared to $51.1 million in the first half of 2015, primarily due to a $7.0 million decline in host sales. Royalty and license fees were $47.4 million, up from $38.1 million in the first half of 2015.

The Company reported operating income of $36.7 million in the first half of 2016, compared to an operating loss of $3.1 million for the first half of 2015. Excluding the inventory write-down of $33.0 million, adjusted operating income was $30.0 million for 2015. For the first half of 2016, we reported net income of $23.8 million, or $0.51 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $10.5 million, or $0.23 per diluted share, for the same period of 2015. Excluding the inventory write-down and the associated $1.9 million reduction of income tax expense, adjusted net income was $20.7 million, or $0.45 per diluted share, for the first half of 2015.

Operating cash flow for the first half of 2016 was $36.2 million, a decrease of 51.8% compared to $75.2 million for the first half of 2015 which included an upfront $42.0 million license and royalty payment.

2016 Guidance

While the OLED industry is still at a stage where many variables can have a material impact on its growth, based upon the most recent and best information on hand, the Company believes it is prudent to revise its 2016 revenues guidance. The Company now expects 2016 revenues to be in the range of $190 million to $200 million.

Dr. Andreas Haldi joins CYNORA as Chief Marketing Officer

With his strong technical and business experience, Andreas Haldi will reinforce CYNORA in the forthcoming commercialization of its high performance blue OLED materials.

CYNORA is preparing the commercialization of its emitting materials for OLEDs. The company is hiring Andreas Haldi to further enhance its already good relationships with the major display makers and to now prepare with them the implementation of its materials in their products.

Andreas Haldi has close to 15 years of experience in the OLED materials field and profound knowledge of the Asian display market. Prior to joining CYNORA, Haldi held manager positions in R&D and sales at Novaled GmbH. For the last five years he was headquartered in Seoul, Korea, as Novaled’s representative in front of the major AMOLED display makers in Asia.

“I am very happy to get Andreas on board” says Gildas Sorin, CYNORA’s CEO. “We are preparing ourselves intensively for the commercialization of our blue emitters. The appointment of the new CMO is a significant signal of CYNORA’s further development and its forthcoming market entry. Blue TADF-based emitters will enable a significant reduction of power consumption in OLED devices and will allow higher display resolution. CYNORA owns a broad IP portfolio with over 100 patent families and is aiming for over 600 patents.

UDC Acquires BASF’s OLED IP Portfolio for USD 96 Million…King of Materials Patents

On 28 June, Universal Display (UDC), dominating the patents within the OLED materials sector, announced that they acquired OLED related patents for approximately USD 96 million.

Most of the portfolio represent patents regarding phosphorescent OLED materials, including over 500 issues and pending patents around the world in 86 patent families. BASF’s OLED portfolio’s average lifetime is 10 years.

UDC is anticipating that this move, that allows them to have over 4,000 issued and pending patents, will help them develop blue emissive systems. As UDC has USD 395.7 million in cash, it should not be a problem financing this IP acquisition cost.

Korean OLED emitting materials companies are also focusing on this move; as the patent competitiveness could be said to sway OLED materials market, IP acquisition is important.

According to UBI Research, with this patent competitiveness UDC led the global OLED emitting materials market in 2015 for two consecutive years. Korean materials companies, including Duksan Neolux, are actively participating in improving their patent competitiveness to respond to UDC’s solid domination of the market.

In April, Professor Jun Yeob Lee (Chemical Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University) explained at a forum that UDC’s patents slightly diminished through litigation, the company still has wide claim that includes almost all of phosphorescent materials sector. He emphasized that UDC began to react through acquiring other patents, and that Korean companies should also search for other methods of response.

In 2015, BASF stopped OLED related research development.

R2D2, a joint project to analyze and to develop high-TRL processes and technologies for manufacturing of flexible OLED funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has been successfully completed. The goal was to work on OLED technology for reasonable priced OLEDs which could easily be employed to manufacture marketable products.

Meanwhile, AUDI AG is offering glass-based OLEDs in a high-volume production model for the first time as the tail lights for the TT RS. The transition to a production-ready OLED product has been achieved through the advances from the R2D2 project. “The R2D2 Project funded by BMBF has brought OLED technology in Germany a good deal further. Sectors beyond lighting and Automotive will follow suit. There are already prospective designs for household appliances and even for aircraft over the long term,” says Project Coordinator Dr May of Fraunhofer FEP. Besides FEP, also AUDI AG, Diehl Aerospace GmbH, HELLA KGaA Hueck & Co., OSRAM OLED GmbH, VON ARDENNE GmbH and Novaled were consortium partners.

Novaled was able to optimize the OLED layers and to develop and provide a set of materials to meet the challenging specifications of the automotive industry. Cost-effective solutions were devised. This included providing mass production stable materials for easy and efficient employment in mass production, as well as saving development time by generating methods that can ascertain the compatibility of new organic materials with manufacturing processes.

One of the success factors of R2D2 was that project partners could cover the whole value chain: from material research to equipment construction, component technology through application studies for future products.

The consortium would like to thank the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for funding the project “R2D2” with a grant of 5.9 million Euros over a 30-month period.

지금까지의 Galaxy S 시리즈의 휘도 증가 추이가 앞으로도 이어진다면 향후 2~3년 내 갤럭시 S시리즈의 휘도는 754니트가 될 것으로 예상된다. 754니트의 갤럭시 S를 생산하기 위해서는 이 제품의 AMOLED에 사용될 블루 발광재료의 휘도가 현재의 약 3.7배 향상돼야 할 것으로 분석된다.

유비산업리서치가 최근 발간한 ‘ Galaxy S Series의 AMOLED 특성 분석 보고서 ’에 따르면 지난 2013년에 출시된 갤럭시 S4 이후의 휘도 증가 경향 분석 결과 향후 2~3년내 풀화이트 휘도가 430니트, 피크 화이트는 754니트인 갤럭시 S 시리즈가 나올 수 있을 것으로 전망된다.

갤럭시 S4의 휘도는 338니트(피크 화이트 기준)이며 400니트 대의 S5, S6를 거쳐 S7은 505니트까지 증가했다. 이 같은 추이를 기반으로 계산해 보면 향후 제품은 754니트가 될 것이라는 분석이 나온다.

보고서에 따르면 휘도 증가를 위해서는 제품에 탑재되는 AMOLED의 발광재료의 휘도가 증가해야 한다. 갤럭시 S7의 경우 레드 재료의 휘도가 142니트, 그린은 338니트, 블루는 26니트다. 754니트의 화면을 구현하기 위해서는 레드는 현재 수치 대비 약 1.5배, 그린은 약 1.2배, 블루는 약 3.7배의 휘도 향상이 이루어져야 한다.

유비산업리서치 관계자는 “향후 제한된 화면 사이즈에서 고해상도를 구현하기 위해서는 발광재료 성능의 향상이 필수적이며 특히 블루 발광재료의 성능 향상에 기술 개발을 집중해야 할 것으로 판단된다”고 설명했다.

UDC (Universal Display Corporation), enabling energy-efficient displays and lighting with its UniversalPHOLED® technology and materials, today reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2016.

For the first quarter of 2016, UDC reported net income of $1.9 million, or $0.04 per diluted share, on revenues of $29.7 million, compared to net income of $1.3 million, or $0.03 per diluted share, on revenues of $31.2 million for the first quarter of 2015.

“In the first quarter, our commercial emitter revenues grew 8% year-over-year, primarily driven by strong green emitter shipments. Royalty and license fees increased by 22%. Host material sales, in line with expectations, declined year-overyear,” said Sidney D. Rosenblatt, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of UDC

Rosenblatt continued, “The OLED landscape continues to expand. New OLED products are launching, capacity is building, equipment bookings are increasing and the pipeline of OLED design activities is broadening.

With OLED display penetration at only about 10% of the total consumer electronic display market, new applications like automotive, virtual reality, augmented reality and signage emerging and OLED lighting transitioning from development stage to commercial, we believe that our long-term growth trajectory remains strong.”

Financial Highlights for the First Quarter of 2016 The Company reported revenues of $29.7 million, compared to revenues of $31.2 million in the same quarter of 2015.

Material sales were $24.3 million, down 9% compared to the first quarter of 2015, primarily due to a $5.0 million decrease in host material sales. This decline was partially offset by an increase of $2.5 million in emitter material sales.

Royalty and license fees were $5.3 million, up from $4.4 million in the first quarter of 2015.

No revenue was recognized under the Samsung Display Co., Ltd. (SDC) licensing agreement in the first quarter, as SDC is obligated to make licensing payments in the second and fourth quarters of the year. For 2016, the Company expects to recognize $75 million in SDC licensing revenues for the full year.

The Company reported operating income of $2.5 million, up from $1.8 million for the first quarter of 2015. Operating expenses were $27.2 million, compared to $29.5 million in the same quarter of 2015.

Cost of materials was $5.1 million, compared to $8.6 million in the first quarter of 2015, reflecting the decline in host material sales volume, which have less favorable margins than the Company’s emitter materials.

The Company’s balance sheet remained strong, with cash and cash equivalents and investments of $395.7 million as of March 31, 2016.

CYNORA, a leader in TADF (thermally activated delayed fluorescence) materials, has made significant progress in its highly efficient blue material developments during the last 6 months: a strong indicator for reaching performance levels requested by the OLED industry.

CYNORA has been working on organic TADF emitting materials during the last 5 years.

Since 2015, CYNORA applies its experience to develop pure organic highly efficient blue dopants for vacuum deposition.

The TADF technology combines high efficiency (3 times better than the state-of-the-art fluorescence technology) together with long lifetime.

OLED displaysincorporating blue TADF materials will reduce power consumption up to a factor of 2.

CYNORA has developed deep blue material reaching an EQE of 16.3% (at 100 cd/m2) compared to 3% reached in October 2015, a factor 5 improvement in six months. In parallel, the company is using sky blue material to improve the device lifetime.

A significant increase in the lifetime to more than 400 h (LT50, 500 cd/m2) has recently been achieved from a level of a few minutes in last October.

“We have yet to reach the performances requested by the OLED display industry” says Thomas Baumann, CYNORA’s CSO, “but our rapid progress during the last 6 months proves our capability to reach the performance levels we have defined together with our key customers to support their technical roadmap. We will use the coming months to combine both efficiency and lifetime in a single deep blue material.”

CYNORA owns a broad IP portfolio on TADF with over 100 patent families and is aiming for over 600 patents.

앞으로 급속도로 시장이 커질 OLED 분야에서 한국 OLED 재료( Materials ) 업계가 경쟁력을 가지려면 특허를 선점해야 한다는 목소리가 커지고 있다.

지난 22일 한국디스플레이산업협회 주관으로 서울 벨레상스 호텔에서 열린 ‘OLED 소재산업의 오늘, 그리고 내일’ 포럼에서 OLED 재료 분야 전문가들은 한국 업체들은 특허 경쟁력을 확보해야 한다고 입을 모았다.

이날 업계와 학계 전문가들은 UDC, Idemitsu Kosan, Novaled 등 글로벌 OLED 재료 강자들의 특허 동향 및 업체별 경쟁력을 분석하고 한국 OLED 재료 업체들이 대응해야 할 방향을 제시했다.

이번 포럼 연사로 참여한 덕산네오룩스 이범성 연구소장은 시장을 선점한 글로벌 강자들에게 후발주자들이 맞서기 힘든 이유로 ‘특허 문제’를 지목했다.

이범성 소장은 “OLED는 패널은 어떤 제품이 들어갔는지 분석이 매우 용이하기 때문에 특허침해 여부가 명확히 드러난다”고 말했다. 이어 “30여개 업체들의 유효특허가 약 6천여건이라 나머지 업체들은 이를 피해가며 개발해야 한다”며 “20년분량의 특허들이 이미 출원 돼 있어 신생업체들이 진입하기가 매우 힘들다”고 설명했다.

이 소장은 “통상 매출액의 0.1%를 특허비용에 쓰면 많이 쓰는 셈인데 덕산네오룩스는 지난해 2.4%를 지불했다”며 이 회사가 특허 경쟁력 확보에 역량을 쏟고 있음을 강조했다.

또 다른 연사였던 성균관대학교 고분자공학부 이준엽 교수는 UDC의 인광특허가 2017년에 만료된다는 사실을 제시하며 이 회사의 후속특허들에 대응해야 한다고 한국 업체들에게 조언했다.

이준엽 교수는 “UDC의 특허는 그동안 소송들을 거치며 다소 축소되긴 했지만 여전히 인광 재료쪽이 거의 다 포함되는 넓은 클레임을 가지고 있다”며 “UDC는 후지의 특허를 인수하는 등 대응에 나섰으며 한국 업체들도 대응 방법을 찾아야 한다”고 말했다.

이 교수는 ▲신규 구조 인광 재료 ▲지연 형광 재료 부문을 UDC의 원천특허를 피해가기 위한 기술 개발 과제로 제시했다.

이번 행사에서 기조연설을 맡은 LG디스플레이의 양중환 연구위원도 “OLED 패널의 가격 경쟁력을 위해 재료 자체를 저렴하게 공급받아야 한다”며 “특허가 비용 절감에 중요하다”고 강조했다.

한편 유비산업리서치가 발간한 ‘2016 Emmiting Materials Annual Report’에 따르면 올해 글로벌 OLED 발광재료 시장은 전년대비 16% 성장한 6억 7700억 달러(한화 약 7700억 원) 규모를 형성할 전망이다.

This year’s global OLED emitting materials market is expected to record US$ 677 million, approximately a 16% increase compared to 2015.

According to 2016 OLED Emitting Materials Annual Report, published by UBI Research, the global OLED emitting materials market is to grow at CAGR of 46%, and record US$ 4,323 million in 2021. The reasons for continued rapid growth include AMOLED equipped smartphone and large area OLED panel mass production increase. AMOLED panel equipped Galaxy S7 series is expected to be a hit this year, and AMOLED application of mainstream Galaxy series is also expected to increase compared to last year.

Furthermore, LG Display is planning to greatly increase this year’s large area OLED panel production. Chinese panel companies are also to actively begin AMOLED panel mass production from this year. Accordingly, the amount of OLED materials entering the global display market will increase.

The global demand for OLED emitting materials in 2016 is estimated to be approximately 38 tonnes. Of this, the amount expected to be used in Korea is approximately 36 tonnes, about 93% of the total demand. Basically, just the amount used by the 2 Korean OLED panel companies, Samsung Display and LG Display, is 93% of the global market. 64% of the total demand is Samsung Display, and 29% is LG Display.

In terms of revenue, of this year’s US$ 677 million, Samsung Display and LG Display are expected to occupy 94%.

As key Chinese panel companies, including BOE, are carrying out or planning AMOLED mass production line, China’s emitting materials demand is estimated to increase from 2017. Accordingly, of global OLED demand, China’s proportion is expected to increase each year, and Korea’s to decrease.

올해 글로벌 OLED 발광재료( Emitting Material ) 시장은 전년대비 약 16% 성장한 미화 6억7700만 달러(한화 약 7700 억원) 규모를 형성할 전망이다.

유비산업리서치가 발간한 ‘2016 OLED 발광재료 보고서(2016 OLED Emitting Materials Annual Report)’에 따르면 2016년부터 전세계 OLED 발광재료 시장은 연평균 46%의 성장률을 그리며 2021년 43억2300만 달러(한화 약 4조 9250억 원) 규모에 달할 것으로 예상된다.

이처럼 OLED 발광재료 시장이 고성장을 지속하는 요인에는 AMOLED 장착 스마트폰 및 대면적 OLED 패널 양산 증가 등이 있다.

올해 AMOLED 패널을 장착한 갤럭시 S7 시리즈의 흥행이 예상될 뿐 아니라 보급형 갤럭시 시리즈의 AMOLED 적용도 지난해보다 증가할 예정이다.

LG Display에서도 올해 대면적 OLED panel 생산을 2015년보다 크게 늘릴 계획이다. 중국의 패널 업체들도 2016년부터 본격적인 AMOLED 패널 양산에 돌입할 예정이다.

이에 따라 전세계 디스플레이 시장에 투입되는 OLED 발광재료의 양도 늘어나게 된다.

2016년 전세계에서 사용될 OLED 발광재료 수요는 약 38 톤으로 관측된다. 이 중 한국에서 사용될 것으로 예상되는 OLED 발광재료양은 전체 수요의 93%에 달하는 약 36 톤에 이를 전망이다.

한국의 두 OLED 패널 제조사인 삼성디스플레이와 LG디스플레이가 사용하는 양만 전세계 93%라는 얘기다. 삼성디스플레이가 전체 수요의 64%, LG디스플레이가 29%의 비중이다.

금액 기준으로는 올해 시장 규모 6억7700만 달러 중 삼성디스플레이와 LG디스플레이가 차지하는 비중은 94%에 이를 것으로 예상된다.

BOE 등 주요 중국 패널 업체들도 AMOLED 양산라인 투자를 진행 또는 계획하고 있어 2017년부터는 중국의 발광재료 수요가 늘어날 예정이다. 이에 따라 글로벌 OLED 발광재료 수요 중 중국의 비중은 해마다 늘어나고 한국의 비중은 줄어들 전망이다.

UDC (Universal Display) that is dominating the global OLED emitting materials market, recorded 11% reduced OLED emitting materials revenue in 2015 compared to 2014. Despite the decreased revenue, it maintained its top place in the market.

According to 2016 OLED Emitting Material Annual Report, published by UBI Research, UDC recorded approximately $ 113 million in 2015 OLED emitting materials revenue. In 2014, this company’s OLED emitting materials revenue recorded $ 127 million and led the global market, and maintained its position in 2015.

In particular, this company is a dominating presence in dopant materials sector. In 2015, UDC occupied 82% of the dopant materials sector, and the rest of the companies share the remaining 18%. Based on the phosphorescent patents, it is supplying phosphorescent red and green dopant to Samsung Display and LG Display.

Following UDC’s top place in 2015 global OLED emitting materials market in terms of revenue, Idemitsu Kosan ranked 2nd, and this was followed by Novaled, Dow Chem., and Samsung SDI. In 2013, Dow Chem. was at the top of the market, but since 2014 UDC overtook the leadership. In 2016, LG Display’s OLED TV mass production line operation rate, materials structure of Galaxy Note series to be mass produced in H2, and other factors are expected to affect the OLED emitting materials market.

UDC is scheduled to announce 2016 Q1 performance on 5 May (local time).

 

UDC, 2015년 OLED 발광재료 매출 11% 하락한 $1억1300만…그래도 1등

글로벌 OLED 발광재료 시장 패권을 쥐고 있는 UDC(Universial Display)가 지난 2015년 OLED 발광재료 매출이 전년대비 약 11% 하락했지만 시장 1위는 지켰다.

유비산업리서치의 ‘2016 OLED Emitting Material Report’에 따르면 UDC는 2015년 OLED 발광재료 부문에서 약 1억1300만달러(한화 약 1285억원)의 매출을 기록했다. UDC는 2014년에 1억2700만달러(한화 약 1442억원)의 매출을 올려 전세계 1위를 차지했으며 이어 2015년에도 패권을 사수했다.

UDC는 특히 Dopant 재료 부문에서 압도적인 점유율을 차지하고 있다. 2015년 Dopant 재료 시장은 UDC가 82%를 점했으며 그 외 업체들이 나머지 18%를 나눠가지고 있다. UDC는 인광 특허를 기반으로 삼성디스플레이와 LG디스플레이에 인광 Red와 Green Dopant를 공급하고 있다.

2015년 글로벌 OLED 발광재료 시장에서 매출액 기준 업체별 순위는 UDC에 이어 Idemitsu Kosan이 2위를 차지했으며 뒤 이어 Novaled, Dow Chem., Samsung SDI 순이다.

Dow Chem.은 지난 2013년에는 OLED 발광 재료 시장 매출 1위였으나 2014년 이후부터 UDC에 주도권을 계속 뺏기고 있는 상황이다.

2016년의 경우 LG디스플레이의 OLED TV 양산라인 가동률, 하반기 양산될 갤럭시 노트 시리즈의 재료구조 등이 OLED 발광재료 시장에 영향을 미칠 것으로 보인다.

한편 UDC는 오는 5월 5일(현지시간) 2016년 1분기 실적을 발표할 예정이다.

 

 

이데미츠코산 재료, LG OLED TV 일본 신제품에 공급

일본의 OLED 재료 업체인 이데미츠코산(Idemitsu Kosan)이 자사의 OLED 재료가 일본 LG전자의 최신 OLED TV에 사용될 것이라고 13일 발표했다.

이데미츠코산은 지난 1980년부터 OLED 재료를 개발해왔으며 특히 블루 발광재료의 품질이 뛰어나다는 게 이 회사의 설명이다. 이데미츠코산은 이와 관련 다수의 특허를 보유하고 있으며 한국과 일본에 공정을 가지고 있다. 이 회사는 다양한 제조사들에게 재료를 공급하고 있다.

이데미츠코산과 LG그룹은 지난 2009년 전략적 제휴를 맺었으며 지난 2014년 12월에는 OLED 기술 분야 및 디바이스 관련 특허 라이선싱 부문에서 협력하기로 한 바 있다.
이에 따라 이데미츠코산의 OLED 재료는 LG전자의 일본 출시 OLED TV 신제품에 들어갈 예정이다.
두 회사는 재료와 제품 개발을 위한 기술 협력을 지속할 예정이며 이를 통해 OLED 디스플레이의 대중화를 이끌 계획이다.

An OLED TV is a next-generation television that has a display which eliminates the need for backlight, which is different from an LCD TV.

Eliminating the need for backlight makes it possible to not only provide a curved and super-thin display but to also represent jet black without being affected by the illumination of the backlight.

Idemitsu has studied and developed OLED materials since the 1980s and has a particular advantage in the development of high-performance blue light-emitting materials. In addition, Idemitsu also has many related patents and manufacturing plants in both Japan and South Korea, and supplies materials to a variety of manufacturers.

After the agreement to form a strategic alliance regarding the OLED business in 2009, Idemitsu and the LG Group concluded an agreement for mutual cooperation in the field of OLED technology and device-related patent licensing in December 2014.

As leading companies, each company has achieved results in product development through their active efforts in this field.

As a result of concluding the agreement, Idemitsu´s OLED material will be used for LG Electronics´ latest television to be released in Japan following the world´s first large high-definition OLED TV which was released by LG Electronics in 2013.

Both companies will continue to provide technical cooperation to develop materials and products that will popularize the use of OLED displays.

[2015 OLED Evaluation Seminar] How can OLED Emitting Materials, Components and Other Materials Markets Survive?

At 2015 OLED Evaluation Seminar (December 4) hosted by UBI Research, Sung-Kee Kang, DS Hi-Metal’s CSO, reported that OLED display market has to expand through OLED TV and new applications in order for OLED emitting materials companies to grow.

 

Presenting under the title of ‘OLED Organic Material Technology, Industry Trend’, Kang introduced the current OLED emitting material value chain. He explained that within OLED emitting materials market, there are too many players considering the current volume and overall OLED display market expansion is a necessity. However, he added that for OLED display to compete against LCD display, OLED TV market has to expand successfully, and new application that utilizes OLED’s characteristics is needed.

 

In order to expand the market, development of OLED emitting materials and other materials is urgently in demand that meet the required conditions. Kang emphasized that at present new technology seeds promotion for the next OLED is needed as well as development of OLED emitting materials, and other flexible/transparent related materials with new functions.

 

Considering LG’s active OLED TV marketing, Apple’s interest in OLED panel application, and possibility for Samsung to apply AMOLED to all models among others, OLED market is anticipated to rapidly grow. Together with this, the industries of OLED emitting material and component/other materials with new functions are also expected to considerably grow.

[2015 OLED 결산 세미나] OLED 발광재료와 부품, 소재시장이 살길은?

유비산업리서치가 개최한 ‘2015 OLED 결산 세미나’에서 덕산 네오룩스 CSO 강성기 전무는 OLED용 발광 재료 업체들이 성장하기 위해서는 OLED TV와 새로운 어플리케이션을 통한 OLED 디스플레이 시장 확대가 되어야 한다고 발표했다.

강성기 전무는 ‘OLED용 유기소재 기술, 산업 동향’이라는 주제로 발표하면서 현재 OLED 발광 재료 value chain을 소개했다. 이에 강 전무는 ‘OLED 발광 재료 시장은 현재 규모에 비해 player가 많아서 전반적인 OLED 디스플레이 시장 확대가 필수적’이라고 강조했다. 하지만 OLED 디스플레이가 LCD 디스플레이에 경쟁력을 갖추기 위해서는 OLED TV시장이 성공적으로 확대되어야 하며, OLED의 특징을 활용한 새로운 어플리케이션 시장 창출이 필요하다고 덧붙였다.

OLED 시장을 확대하기 위해서는 OLED TV와 flexible, transparent등에 필요한 요구 조건을 갖추고 있는 OLED용 발광 재료와 부품 소재의 개발이 시급하다. 강성기 전무는 ‘지금은 OLED용 발광 재료, flexible/transparent관련 신 기능 소재 개발과 함께 Next OLED를 위한 신기술 seeds 육성이 필요한 상황’이라고 강조하였다.

LG의 본격적인 OLED TV 마케팅과 Apple의 OLED panel 적용에 대한 관심, Samsung 스마트폰의 전모델 AMOLED 적용 가능성 등 앞으로 OLED 시장이 급격히 성장할 것으로 기대되는 가운데 OLED 발광재료와 신기능 부품/소재 산업 또한 크게 성장할 것으로 기대된다.

LG Display, strategic partnership for OLED business with Japanese firm Idemitsu Kosan

LG Display (CEO Sang-beom Han, 韓相範 / www.lgdisplay.com) and OLED materials firm Idemitsu Kosan (CEO 月岡隆, Takashi Tsukioka, hereinafter “Idemitsu”) entered into the agreement on the 11th about the ‘mutual cooperation concerning OLED technology and related patent license’ to further strengthen their competitiveness in the OLED industry.

 

In 1997, Idemitsu developed what was then the world’s brightest blue light organic emitting material for OLED and since then, every effort has been made to develop high-tech OLED materials and diverse device technologies based on its own molecular design and organic synthesis technologies. Consequently, Idemitsu Kosan, the original OLED material technology firm of a top global level possesses numerous major patents in relation to the OLED technology.

 

Through this strategic partnership, LG Display will be accessible to the excellent OLED materials and device structures of the Idemitsu Kosan which will lead to consolidate the research, product development and production of the OLED for TV and flexible OLED, and this eventually will accelerate the expansion of OLED market. By providing high performance OLED materials to the LG Display and collaborating in terms of technology development and commercialization, Idemitsu Kosan is expected to secure leading global clients in the display field.

 

The industry prospects that the two companies have made a chance to perform sound leadership by maximizing the synergy in the OLED business through this partnership.

 

Sang-deok Yeo, president of LG Display OLED Business unit said that, “Through the latest partnership, LG Display is to gain momentum to create OLED TV market on the basis of the OLED related patents of Idemitsu Kosan as well as accelerate the developments of flexible and transparent OLEDs” and added that “This win-win collaborative relationship is expected to have a huge synergy effect on OLED business for both companies.”

AMOLED manufacturing equipment market, expected to be about 36 trillion won from 2015 to 2020

According to an equipment report, “2014 AMOLED manufacturing Equipment Technology Analysis and Market Forecast (2015~2020),” published by a market research firm, UBI Research, the AMOLED manufacturing equipment market size will be about 36 trillion won from 2015 to 2020. Stepper appears to be the largest sector in the equipment market by forming about 10 trillion won and taking up about 30 % of market share. Evaporator will take 17% with about 6 trillion.

 

It is forecasted that Chinese makers will start to invest in AMOLED business. Predicted market size is about 6 trillion won in 2015. In 2017, full-scale investment on the AMOLED panel line for TV will be started. About 9.5 trillion won market will be formed and become the largest market size by 2018.

 

From 2015 to 2020, the market share of backplane manufacturing, encapsulation and OLED manufacturing equipment will be 69%, 17% and 14%, respectively, in the overall AMOLED equipment market.

 

In the overall AMOLED equipment market by country, Korean market size is expected to grow to about 20 trillion won taking up 55% market share for six years and it is analyzed that Korea will continuously lead the AMOLED industry.
