Universal Display Reveals Advances in Flexible Plastic Transparent Phosphorescent OLED Technologies

On Thursday, 18th June, Universal Display unveiled new and elegant OLED white lighting design prototypes and technologies at the Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The items showcased the company’s device architecture and material and manufacturing process core competencies. These proof-of-concept panels and products, including the new Loop Lamp prototype, demonstrate how OLEDs offer flexibility, transparency, thinness and manufacturability on plastic for unbreakable displays and luminaires.

According to Universal Display’s press release, the Loop Lamp is comprised of paper-thin, flexible, shatterproof OLED lighting ‘ribbon’ panels designed into a unique concept chandelier. It is cool to touch and offers a high color rendering index (CRI) that can closely mimic natural sunlight. Manufactured using Universal Display’s single layer UniversalBARRIER® encapsulation technology, the plastic based OLED panels resist exposure to moisture and oxygen, are lightweight and can bend in all directions. The Loop Lamp represents one of many concepts in the application of flexible OLED lighting solutions in home décor, architectural design, art and sculpture.

Steven V. Abramson, President and CEO of Universal Display, explained that the Loop Lamp “embodies a number of our core technologies and fully embraces new design freedoms associated with OLEDs to create thin, conformable, non-glaring illumination sources for the display and solid-state lighting markets”. These prototypes showcase Universal Display’s innovative advancement in phosphorescent OLED materials and device architectures, encapsulation, optical outcoupling, flexible and transparent designs and processes as well as to present the extraordinary characteristics of OLEDs. Abramson also revealed their determination to continue driving down costs and increasing OLED performance to enable a future filled with beautifully designed, energy-efficient forms of light.

Universal Display, flexible 플라스틱 투명 인광 OLED 신기술 공개

6월 18일 목요일, Universal Display는 연간 주주 총회에서 새로운 white OLED lighting panel 프로토타입과 관련 기술들을 공개하였다. 이날 공개한 것은 디바이스 구조와 재료, 제조공정의 핵심 기술 등이다. Universal Display는 새로운 Loop Lamp 제품의 프로토타입을 공개하였으며, 그 밖에 기술을 검증하기 위해 제작된 패널과 제품들을 공개하였다.

Universal Display에 따르면, Loop Lamp는 독특한 컨셉의 샹들리에로 리본형태의 flexible OLED lighting panel들로 디자인되었고, 종이처럼 얇고 유연하며 깨지지 않는다. Loop lamp에 적용된 flexible OLED lighting panel은 발열이 적고, 높은 CRI (color rendering index)와 자연광 비슷한 빛을 낼 수 있다. 또한 단층의 UniversalBARRIER® encapsulation 기술을 개발하였으며, 이를 적용하여 경량이면서 모든 방향으로 구부러질 수 있는 flexible OLED lighting panel을 제조하였다고 밝혔다. 이 flexible OLED lighting은 홈인테리어와 건축 디자인, 예술, 조각품 등 다양한 컨셉의 조명 솔루션에 적용할 수 있으며, Loop Lamp는 이런 컨셉들 중 하나라고 밝혔다.

Universal Display의 CEO Steven V. Abramson씨는 Loop Lamp에 대해 “Universal Display의 수많은 핵심기술들을 통해 얇고 어느 장소에서나 사용 가능하며 눈이 부시지 않는 OLED lighting panel을 개발했고 이를 디스플레이와 고체 조명시장에 적용하여 새롭고 자유로운 디자인을 포용하였다.”라고 설명했다. 또한 “프로토타입들은 인광 OLED 재료와 디바이스 구조, encapsulation, optical outcoupling, 유연하고 투명한 디자인, 제조 공정에 대한 Universal Display의 혁신적인 발전을 보여주었으며 앞으로도 아름다운 디자인과 에너지 효율이 높은 조명 제작과 제조비용의 절감 등 미래 OLED 조명의 성능 향상을 지속하겠다”라는 의지를 밝혔다.

LG디스플레이, 美, UDC와 OLED사업 전략제휴

LG디스플레이(대표이사 한상범, 韓相範 / www.lgdisplay.com)와 OLED 재료업체인 UDC(Universal Display Corporation / 대표이사 Steven V. Abramson)가 26일, ‘OLED기술 상호 협력 및 관련특허 라이센스(License) 협약’을 체결하고 OLED사업 경쟁력 강화에 나섰다.

1994년 설립된 UDC는 3,300개가 넘는 OLED관련 특허를 보유하고 있으며, 특히 친환경, 저소비전력을 가능하게 하는 인광 OLED 재료 원천특허를 보유하고 있는 세계적인 OLED 소재 원천기술 기업이다.

이번 전략적 제휴를 통해 LG디스플레이는 UDC로부터 우수한 OLED 재료공급 및 디바이스(Device) 구조 등을 제안 받음으로써 TV용 OLED 및 플렉시블 OLED의 연구, 제품개발 및 생산을 더욱 강화할 수 있게 되어 OLED 시장확대에 가속도를 붙일 수 있게 되었다.  UDC는 LG디스플레이에 고성능의 OLED 재료를 공급하고 기술개발과 제품화 협력을 통해 디스플레이 분야에서의 글로벌 리딩 고객을 확보할 수 있게 되었다.

업계에서는 양사가 이번 제휴를 통해 OLED 사업분야에서 시너지를 극대화하여 업계에서 확고한 리더십을 발휘할 수 있는 계기를 마련한 것으로 보고 있다. 이미 LG디스플레이와 UDC는 2007년 세계 최초로 4인치 크기의 풀컬러 플렉서블 AMOLED를 공동으로 개발한 바 있다.

LG디스플레이 OLED사업부장 여상덕 사장은, “이번 전략적 제휴로 OLED TV 시장 확대에도 탄력을 받을 뿐만 아니라 LG디스플레이의 플렉시블 및 투명 OLED 개발도 더욱 가속도를 붙일 것” 이라며, “윈-윈 협력관계는 양사의 OLED사업에 큰 시너지 효과가 기대되며 앞으로도 LG디스플레이는 시장과 고객에게 더욱 차별화된 제품을 제공할 것.”라고 밝혔다.

Universal Display, concluded a contract to supply PHOLED material to BOE

A Taiwanese IT medium, Digitimes, reported that Universal Display Corporation (UDC) had announced its expanded evaluation agreement for PHOLED material supply to BOE.

Chairman of BOE, Wang Dong sheng said, “UDC is a leading company that supplies PHOLED material. We will lead the development of the OLED industry with partners including UDC by establishing a close cooperative relation.”

BOE is developing panels and modules for 55” AMOLED TV with oxide TFT and WRGB in Gen8 pilot line in Hefei, and displayed 55” FHD AMOLED panel at SID 2014. It also plans to mass-produce small and medium size AMOLED panel from the AMOLED line in Ordos in the latter half of this year.
